The Alphabet 4: A Few Phonics Rules

1.  When ㅅ, ㄷ, ㅈ, ㅊ come at the end of a syllable, they sound like "t".  핫 is pronounced "hot," not "hos."

2.  When ㅅ is followed by "i" as in 시 (hour), it makes the "sh" sound.  시 is pronounced "shee," not "see."

3.  Also, when ㅅ is followed by "y" vowels ㅛ, ㅑ, ㅠ, ㅒ, ㅖ, ㅕ, the ㅅ makes a "sh" sound.  샴 is pronounced "sham," not "syam."

4.  외 is pronounced "way," and 위 is pronounced "we."  This is just a peculiar case.

5.  When "p" is followed by "n," the "p" changes to an "m" sound.  감사합니다 (thank you) is pronounced "kahm-sahm-nee-tah," not "kahm-sahp-nee-tah."
